SPRING MFA DANCE CONCERT: LOST PATTERNS

Lost Patterns

CHOREOGRAPHED BY REBECCA HILL

UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, SPRING 2022

This dance piece was an exploration of Appalacian flat footing - a regional variation of rhythmic dancing. The choreographer wanted to explore the future of this type of dancing, where it could go and how to deconstruct it. We had many discussions about avoiding gendered and regional stereotypes. I wanted to explore quilting for it’s Americana quality and how it replicated pixelization, as well as giving the modified workwear aesthetic a sense of patching and repair. In the end, we wanted to create a group that felt like a community as well as allowed each dancer to feel unique within the group.
